Course description

You will learn how to apply basic capital structure and valuation techniques to the analysis of strategic decisions, such as mergers and acquisitions, reorganisations, and raising capital. The course will then take you beyond the analysis of capital structure and valuation techniques, by focusing on interactions between financial and strategic decisions in corporations.

This course will address the following key topics:

  • Financial markets and project valuation

  • Corporate and competitive strategy; mergers & acquisitions

  • Financial distress and the interactions between financing and investment decisions; leveraged buyouts

  • Strategy for new businesses; going public and private


Introductory economics and introductory finance.  Students must be familiar with finance topics such as discounted cash-flow analysis, WACC and CAPM; advanced knowledge of corporate finance is not required.

Dr Vicente Cuñat

Dr Vicente Cuñat is an Associate Professor at LSE. He joined the Finance Department in 2007. He holds an MSc in Finance and Economics from CEMFI and a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics. He has been teaching Corporate Finance and Management courses since 1999. His research interests are Corporate Finance and Corporate Governance both at a theoretical and empirical level.


Dr Daniel Paravisini

Dr Daniel Paravisini is a Professor of Finance at the London School of Economics. He has a PhD in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and has published his research on credit markets and institutions in top economics, finance, and behavioural sciences journals such as American Economic Review, the Journal of Finance, the Review of Economic Studies, and Management Science. Professor Paravisini's research has received three times the Brattle Award, given by the American Finance Association to the best papers in Corporate Finance published by their journal every year. He is co-Editor and Associate Editor of several leading journals in finance and economics and is a research associate of the Centre for Economic Policy Research and the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development.
