PhD Student Exchanges

LSE has established PhD Student Exchange programmes with a small number of institutions around the world. These exchanges offer our research students a wonderful opportunity to visit another institution, to benefit from additional research resources (archival and advisory) and to experience the academic culture and professional networks of another country. Successful applicants may also work on related publications/presentations, or attend conferences and workshops both at the host institution and within the wider national academic community. To support these PhD student exchanges, the Academic Partnership Office manages two separate bursary schemes:

Partnership PhD Mobility Bursaries 2017/18 -
Applications Now Open!

The Partnership PhD Mobility Bursaries provide funding to enable LSE PhD students to undertake research for two - three months at one of our eight institutional partners.

The Partnership PhD Mobility Bursaries are open to LSE PhD students and successful applicants receive up to £2,500 towards travel expenses, accommodation, subsistence, educational materials and/or other education-related costs.

Applications for the 2017-2018 year closed in March 2017. However a small number of bursaries are still available for visits to:

  • The University of Cape Town (2 bursaries)
  • National University of Singapore (1 bursary)
  • Peking University (1 bursary)

Prospective applicants are asked to ensure that they read the guidance notes and then submit the Key Information Cover Sheet, along with supporting documentation, by midday on Monday 20th November 2017. Applications should be emailed to academic_partnerships@lse.ac.uk.

ESRC DTC Partnership PhD Exchange Bursaries

The ESRC DTC PhD Partnership Exchange Bursaries provide funding to enable LSE PhD students to undertake a period of research for 2 -3 months at a non-Western university (the full list of institutions is included in the Guidance Notes below). As with our Partnership PhD Mobility bursaries, successful applicants will receive up to £2,500 towards travel expenses, accommodation, subsistence, educational materials and/or other education-related costs. The deadline for submitting applications for the 2016-17 year (including receipt of supporting documentation) is midday on Friday 10th February 2017. Reference information can be found in the Guidance Notes and Process Document.
